Evaluation part 3: What have you learnt from your audience feedback?

Throughout the production of the trailer, we receiver continiouse feedback which allowed us to make adjustments to the trailer, which will hopefully improve it. Below are some examples of what feedback we got.
comments:
"the music fitted well with the genre and form of the trailer"

"You have created a good piece from the technology you have been provided with, however I think that you must use more footage of the two girls as I think as they are in the magazine cover"

" Need less blank screens as it uses up time"

"A good trailer! I would see it!"

"The genre is what I would expect you to do"

From these comments, I have learnt that we must be more experimenting with genres. We did a thriller/horror last year which means we are more adventurous with deciding what genre to choose. However we ruled out from doing a comedy because we think it would be harder to create a funny script and screen play. However we was willing to do a drama as well! If we had the chance to do this project again, we would most likely do this genre.

Another feedback comment we got, was to adjust the slow motion of the falling leaf. The audience felt that the leaf had to fall slower down the screen, causing a "penny dropping" effect.

we have also had some positive feedback from the audience, most comments was on the background music and the screenplay. We informed each individual what technology we had to use so they were aware of the limitation of what we could produce.

We have also used questionnaires to help us receive a more narrowed response from the target audience. This way we knew what to improve on.

Evaluation part 2: How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

Films use a variety of marketing techniques such as trailers, posters, magazines and websites. We have decided to create a trailer, poster and magazine cover examples. It is important that all three of these texts compliment each other so that the audience know the texts advertise the same type of trailer. For example,we have applied the main character in the centre of all three texts.
In our Poster and magazine cover, we have tried to emphasise the faces on the characters, that they are all scared. by creating this type of synergy we are able to elaborate that the film is some sort of thriller. The darkness and abandoned affect on all three of the texts help to ensure that the film is set in an area that not many people go to, which will limit the amount of contacts the three protagonists have when they try to escape the protagonists. This will have a mirroring effect on the audience by interpreting what will happen to the girls- will they get away?

There are many famous film magazines we could have chosen from, such as Empire and Interview. We chose Total Film. as you can see below, I have produced an analyses of the magazine poster, I have only focused on the effects that compliments the other two media products.

It is important that aspects of the trailer compliment the films poster and magazine cover. By successfully linking the three media types together, it makes their purpose easier to identify for the audience; to promote the film.

The image above shows that I have annotated Total Film's front cover of the Sherlock Holmes edition. in relation to our magazine cover, the main characters have been centred in the middle of the page, this is effective because they audience would know who the main article in the magazine are featuring.  We have also tried to use a colour theme to the magazine- red, white and a browny/grey colour. We have used this colour theme to emphasise on an earthy and muddy feeling.

Both of the magazines have used the "U"shape layout of tag lines surrounding the centred picture. However the teasers have swapped places with the magazines tag line. This edition distracts the audience from the tagline as it is at the bottom of the page, and shadows the featuring films title.

As you can see, I have analysed our groups final film poster. In comparison to the example, our film poster has not made the release date of the film clear as it could be, meaning our trailer is not as effective as it could be. It does not meet one of the criteria's of a film trailer, which is to inform the audience the release date, so they know when to look out for the times and watch it.  To make the date clearer we could have used a bolded font colour such as red as it will stick with the colour theme and show up against the dark background. It is important that we made the release date visually strong so the audience can easily find out when it will be in the cinema.

On the other hand, we have stuck to the colour theme throughout our ancillary products. Alike the Sherlock Holmes poster, we have used the same colours in the poster and on the magazine cover for Total Film.  This will have an effect on the audience because they will be able to relate the poster to the trailers. I have also noticed that the posters both include some sort of indication of the setting of the main scenes. In our trailer, the photo is in a wooded area, this implies that a great deal of the film is in the woods. In my example, the eiffel Tower is in the background, this could signify that the film is set in France-Paris.

Another difference that I have noticed between the two posters, is that we did not mention who was starring in our film. Yet the other poster did. I believe that they mentioned that Robert Downey JR was in the film because he is a well known actor which will help to draw in views. On the other hand, we had no famous actors, so by mentioning who was the starring roles, we did not think it would have the same effect by drawing in views.

evaluation part 1: In what ways does my media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

From analysing our results from our research, we have been able to identify the forms and conventions of real media products and tried to apply them to the trailer, magazine and poster.

magazine cover:
From looking at the conventions of real film magazine covers, we have noticed that they all include a masthead, barcode, name of the main article of the magazine, cover lines, feature article photo selling line and a head line (usually the name of the character(s) in the photo.
We have challenged the conventions of a real poster by not including the page numbers of the articles, this is because we had trouble making it clear what article was on what page. On the other hand, we have decided this is more effective as it encourages readers to look through the whole magazine and see  everything, while looking for what they wanted to see. we have also challenged it by making the font harder to see against the background. we wanted to stick to an earthy colour, yet with a red that will help keep a consistence of the films name. This consistency will have an effect on the audience as they most likely be familiar with the poster.

Poster:
We have come to the decision that all posters must include an eye catching font,  a date that it is released, billing-block, a focal picture (usually or the main characters in the film) tagline and sometimes reviews.
We have challenged the form and conventions in our film poster by creating a very dark boarder, whereas most posters are brighter or have some sort of brighter light in the background, we have used a slight lighter area in the centre of the poster to help focus on the main character. it also helps to make the two antagonists in the background look more like two black figures- this makes them look more anonymous.  Like most other posters, we have applied a bold title, tagline and a bliiing-block. We are aware that the font of the billing-block is slightly harder to see, yet we wanted to go for a darkening and earthy effect. It also helps to put all the focus on the picture and the title.

Film:
we understand that film trailers are important when marketing a film. They use important moments from the film, in thrillers they sometimes use some of the scariest moments in films which will help draw in the audience and possibly feel scared from just watching the trailer. The trailer must include the title of the film, name of the production companies and sometimes reviews. They must also include the release date or "coming soon" on the trailer- so the audience know when to go to the cinema and have something to look forward to see. The main actors or any major actors must me mentioned so the audience know what to expect. if the trailer has any major actors in the trailer it means that the audience will expect the film to be good as well.
We have challenged the form and conventions of film trailers by not having any major actors in the trailer, by no fault this could not be helped, however we applied what would be some important moments in the trailer which will help to draw in the audience. we have used River Road productions and Columbia Productions. Both of these are large production companies which helps the audience think it is a good film.

Actors/Actress'
We tried to make the need for additional actors in the trailer minimal as we did not want to totally rely on other people. However we was lucky enough to find two others that were willing to help us. These two characters would act at the antagonists. They had to wear hoodies which covered their top halves of their faces, loose trousers and walking shoes. This gave a stereotyped image of young people.

The main character was someone in the group, this way we knew we could rely on them. She had to wear clothes that someone would want to go camping in, usually a hoddie, leggings and wellies. These clothes our actor (grace) must be happy to get muddy.

Myself and Shannon also volunteered to be in the trailer. We were the main characters two friends that she went on the trip with. We both had to wear simular clothing to grace.

Roles in the group

Roles in the group
After completing our AS Media Course Work last year, we was able to recognise out strengths and weaknesses. Mine and Katies was helping to edit the film and work the cameras, Graces was acting and Shannons was editing the pictures and working the camera. However we all wanted to participate with every role so we still got to participate. Eventually me and Shannon took part in the film trailer aswell, yet we didnt want a major role, so only appeared for a short period of time in the trailer.

evaluation part 4: What media technologies did you use in the construction of the trailer, poster and magazine cover?

Trailer:
This year we were supplied with two new cameras for my group. This meant that we had to adapt to these cameras quickly and try to find out what features it has; which will allow us to be more creative with the effects. In comparison to the cameras we had last year, these used memory cards which made it a lot easier to upload footage, whereas the older cameras had tapes which means a lead had to connect the cameras to the computers in order to transfer the footage- this took much longer.

On the Apple MACs we were supplied with a vairty of programs, yet we chose to use Final cut express  and Garage Band. Both of these allowed us to create and edit footage and the music. Luckily, we used Final cut express last year so are more capable of what we can use it for. The progam permitted us to view the layout of the film trailer easily- by breaking the clips into blockes. The program also brought all the footages together, and everntually add in the sound. Whether it was diegetic or non-diegetic, we was able to syncronise the sound to the footage, however this was fiddely.
Garage Band is a program we used to create the background music. It is important that we didnt use copywritten tracks, so we created our own to how we wanted it. This way we wouldnt need to create the footage to a sound track. The program gave us the power to slow down our music as well as change the pitch.

It was also handy that three of us can drive and have access to a car. This is because we used a tracking technique in the trailer which was used to show the setting of the film was in the woods. Cars was also used to portray that the three protagonist girls were on a road trip to the woods, we was also able to track behind on the road. It is also handy that we could drive as it made us more felxable with the dates we could film.

Magazine:
Even though we were provided with new cameras, we also had access to a camera that gave a clearer still shot. We used this camera to take the pictures for the magazine and poster.

On the Apple MACs we used Photoshop. This program helped us to edit any unwanted parts of the picture we didnt want. For example, the metal container in the background had a lot of graffiti on it. At first we wanted this to help portray it was abandoned. However, it got confused with the font on the page. So we minimised the scratches.

Poster
As mentioned previously, we had the privilage to use a camera that provided a better picture quality. We used this to take all the pictures for the poster.

We also used Fireworks and Photoshop. These programs allowed us to adjust the lighting which got rid of the blocked effect at the edge of the photo. We thought the block shape of the photo would be a problem, however by adjusting the lighting around the edge gave a darkening and scary effect. The light in the middle of the photo also helped the audience to focuse more on the main character.

Self assessment

Our task was to create a film trailer and two anxcillary texts. I teamed up with three others which luckily I worked with on the last years project. This is an advantage because we are aware of each others strengths and weaknesses.

Overlooking my role in the group, my focus was on garageband; working on the background music, participating on the camera work, some appearance in the trailer/magazine cover, editing and brainstorming initial ideas as we went. This sets an example that I have had an input with the final product of my groups trailer, Magazine cover and poster.

Skills and qualities such as being open-minded and flexibility has allowed me to listen to others ideas in the group (even if I did not totally agree with some), the ideas have significantly improved each of the products. One of the feebacks that we got was to apply a sound effect of the car breaking hard. Some of our group thought that the sound would make the trailer sound more unrealistic by making the break more prominent. Yet the feedback showed us that it is important to let the audience know what was going on the the scene.

On the other hand, I believe that my performance could have improved by not taking up so much time by laughing in the trailers. I am aware that I am no Oscar winning actress, however I found it hard to compose myself when trying to act scared.

Below are some behind the scenes photos, unfortunately we could not find photos of all the participants that had pictures behind the scenes.

Final magazine cover

This is our final magazine cover. We have chosen to use the Total Film magazine name after analysing the structure and layout the magazine uses. It fits in best with how we pictured our front cover. We had trouble finding a suitable place for the name of the film. This is because is doesn't show well against the blue jumper on one of the characters. To help improve we made the font bolder/ We knew we couldn't edit the colour of text as we wanted a consistency of the trailer title on all of the promotions. We have decided to use a colour scheme for the other fonts, red, white and grey; all these colour compliment each other.

Magazine cover possible photos

Below are two pictures that we believe to be the best pictures for our Magazine front cover. We have chosen this destination behind a large metal container because the scratches give an abandoned and rough effect and emphasis the three girls in the shot they are not happy in the situation.

In this shot we have placed the main character in the front of the other two characters (her friends). This is effective because it allows the audience know who the story is about, and who the main character is above all. The three characters faces show their personalities:  (from left to right) one is scared, the main character gives a more on looking, serious and scared approach whereas the last character presents a more serious face and body structure. The placing of these characters also help the layout of the cover lines around the side.

This photo presents the two friends in front of the main character, this focuses more on the two characters on the side, which means it is least effective because the audience will not know who the main character is.

music commentary

The Sound track is one of the most important features on a trailer. It gives a great impact on the audience by giving them the impression what the film is like. For example if the trailer was an action film, it would have an upbeat rhythm to portray the intensity and energy.

The commentary script

"The beginning of the music starts at an average speed with two deep pitched 'boom' sounds which foreshadow the traumatic events that will occur to the protagonists. We thought this would be an effective start as it will work well alongside the three girls before they are taken.
After 20 seconds the beat of the music stops suddenly and low pitched drum beats are introduced. The continuity of the beats act as a countdown to the action, they also signify the idea of a sudden shift in the equilibrium. We believe that this worked well as it evokes a conventional feeling of anticipation which is commonly felt in thrillers.
Between 27-44 seconds, this section of the music is quite a long interlude. this also tells the audience that there will be a shift in the equilibrium. Therefore, making the audience pay attention to everything they see, in order to anticipate the traumatic events which will be later introduced in the trailer. This part of the soundtrack is conventional in a thriller and is effective in reinforcing our message - that fate does not discriminate and nothing goes according to plan.
From 44 - 58 there is a change in tempo for the action parts. It increases in volume and speed to show the chase scene. This is a vital part in our soundtrack as we intended to sync it with fast paced shots.
After that section the volume increases even more and is therefore introducing a more intense feeling of anxiety. our intention for making the tempo intensify is to overpower our audience's sense of desperation. We wanted the pace to symbolise a heartbeat, seeing as generally when people feel scared they experience a "heart raising moment" when you can physically hear your heartbeat in your ears. The overpowering sound of the track aims to do just that as it is really effective in emotionally moving our audience."

Questionnaire reuslts

We asked 30 people to fill in the questionnaire, they were all a variety of age groups however we gave most of the questionnaires to young people/teenagers as this is the age group we are hoping to make our target audience. For our first question we asked what genre they preferred.  We used the next question as if it was going to be used for a real business, the creators would need to know how often the film would need to be advertised to make sure that the audience would be aware it was out in the cinema. my group used this question to know how to display the release date of the film, we have decided to name the season the film was going to be released as if narrows the release date more.

The third question gave us a more vague idea if there is a giant age group that views the cinema. If it was a family, odds are that the target audience would be larger. The forth question gave us an idea of the age certificated film they watch. Most people watch 12As, however we think this is because a variety of the people we asked where under 15 years old. We wanted our target audience to be around 15 years/ teenagers/young people. This is why we rated our film to be 15.

Here we had to find out what attracts the audience to a film. Most say the actor/ actress, and i agree. If I saw Johnny Depp of Keira Knightly in a film trailer, I would know i would already be attracted to it. However in the case that we are being assessed on how clear the trailer is, we wanted to focus on letting the audience know the plot of the trailer. The sixth question allows us to know how many people of one particular age filled in the questionnaire. Most people was between 15-17 years, this is because this is the centre of our target audience so we took more pride in what they said, yet we still considered the other results.

For the seventh question, we asked what the gender of the audience was. This is because we wanted to know in ratio, what people preferred. If more people chose a Rom-Com for the preferred genre, we thought this could be because most of the people we handed the questions out to was female. And more males would chose action films. Luckily in this case both genders chose a thriller. Lastly we asked the audience how they would access information about a film online. A majority of the audience chose through the official film site. We used this option to help decide for ourselves whether to create our own film website. We have.

What I think went well

Making a film trailer can be unpredictable. It was important that we were prepared for any mistakes and how we would overcome them. Luckily it only took us a few weeks to actually film the trailer meaning that the weather was more or less the same, and it god dark around the same time. This helped us to figure out what time to start filmingin roughly before it gets too dark.
However one time we filmed, we underestimated how quick it gets dark. The footage turned out to be very dark which made it hard to see what was actually going on in the clip. Although we still used some of the footage in the trailer because we though the low key lighting provided mystery and how natural the sarroundings was to provoke tention and an abandoned sensation.

Another aspect that went well was that we knew how to use Final Cut Express. This means that we are able to recognise what we are capable of doing; It us important that we knew how long it took to edit footage on this program otherwise we would run out of time and will have to rush the project. Luckily we left enough time. Just about enough to make any improvements to help increase our final grade.
This was also the first year we used Garage Band. This program helped us to create the background music- which influences the audience to feel what we want them to feel, scared and at the edge of their seats.

A good group, everyone in my group have put some sort of input to the final piece. We have all worked well and given ideas to develope the film trailer. Each team member has their own abilities which have come to the advantage to have different roles in the group. My input was the music, shannons was best at editing the pictures, katie did most of the editing with input of everyone elses and grace done the acting. We all had a turn with oporating the camera as well.

sound effects

One of our feedbacks was to create some sound effects. We have chosen to apply the sound of the car skidding.
The skidding car sound helps the audience identify that the person who stepped out into the road was totally unexpected. Whereas the man shouting with no footage of who is shouting it, leaves an anonymous image. Could it be someone who cares for the girls and wants to find them? Or could it be someone that wants the hunt the girls- if it is this option the blank screen leaves the character anonymous making him mysterious.

How I have progressed from AS to A2

From 2011 to 2012 we was assigned to create a film opening. this was the first time we used the technology available, such as the flip cameras, Final Cut Express and Garage Band. We had a brief guideline of how to use these programs and the flip cameras was very straight forward.

For the A2 project we was assigned to create a film trailer and two ancillary texts. We chose to make a magazine cover and poster for the film. We had the same access to the technology used for our AS project, which came to an advantage as we was able to expand our expertise and experiment more with the programs.

We was supplied with new cameras of a higher standard which allowed us to get a clearer shot and zoom in closer in awkward settings. In comparison to the AS project, we was very limited to what we could film, the picture was blurry plus the picture did not fill the whole screen, whereas the clips filmed with the newer cameras are of a better quality, and fills the screen without any black edges. This provides a more cinematic effect on the audience when they view the film trailer. The new camera also took pictures, whereas the flip camera did not. Luckily it did not take pictures though, otherwise the finished product wouldn't be of a good quality. The improvement of cameras had an effect on me because it  developed more opportunity for me and my group members to be more creative with our trailer and ancillary texts.

On Final Cut Express, we found it hard to adapt to the program while producing the film opening, and underestimated how long it would take to edit the footage. Meaning that we had to slightly pick up our working pace to meet the deadline. This came to a disadvantage because we was not able to experiment as much with the program and what it offered. For the A2 project, we was a lot more aware of how much time it takes to edit the footage. By leaving enough time to experiment with the program, we was able to adjust the sound on the trailer and the diegetic sound so it suited to how we wanted. Leaving enough time to experiment for the trailer ; has had an effect on my ability to work on my knowledge of the program to get the most out of it as we possibly could.

For the A2 project, we had to create our own music and sound. Meaning we had no choice but to use Garage Band. No one had the experience to actually create a tune on the program, however I enjoyed this very much which meant I was more motivated to work towards developing the music. I was able match the tempo of the music to the trailer which helps to influence the audiences emotions. for example, the tempo would quicken as action is apparent in the trailer, this will build tension.
For our first project, we only used the program vaguely, we used the program to deepen a voice to give a more manly and dominating effect. This hopefully had an effect on the audience by making them realise how intimidating the man shouting is.

While producing our first product, we lacked the amount of variety shots which made it hard for us to make the storyline clear to the audience. To improve next time for the A2 project, we spent more time thinking of what shots we could do. A lot of the shots we did not need however we wanted to save time by doing a lot of the shots in one go. There was a var By having a variety of shots, we had more to choose from. It it important to use a varity of shots such as experimenting with angles and the camera movements. This time we focused on the panning movement and either a high or low angle shot. This helped to show power between the characters in the film trailer.

Questionnaire

We have carried out a questionnaire as part of our market research. Which will help us decide what type of film trailer to create. We have handed out the questionnaire to various age groups so we can distinguish who our target audience is; and their preferences. Below is a mock of the questionnaire that we handed out...

The title- Queensdown Warren

We eventually had to come up with a name for our film. Yet it was hard to decide what title we would go for. This is because we could have given it the title of the main characters name, an object that the film is based about or the name of the place.

A variety of films have given their titles based on their main character, such as:

  • Matilda
  • Dear John
  • Sydney White
  • Harry Potter
Examples of films named after objects:
  • The box
  • Jimanji
  • The notebook
  • The Ring
Examples of films named after places:
  • Home Alone
  • ST Trinians
  • Eden Lake
  • London to Brighton
Overall we have decided to name our film after the place we shot most of our trailer- "Queensdown Warran' the name fits perfectly with the trailer as the girls go on a trip to the woods... which is the "Queensdown Warren". The word "Warren" coincidently gives an effect that the girls are trapped in the woods.

Film title effects

While editing the trailer, we noticed the film tite needed to have some sort of effects to it, this would help it stand out more and make it noticable that that was the name of the trailer. We used  Adobe After Effects CS6.

This text movement is really effective because the speed of the effect helps to emphasise on the adrenaline of the chase. However we chose not to use this effect as the speed also took away the suspense of a hiding sensation.

We considered this type of effect because it is different from the other effects. However it takes 30 seconds to finish which would mean that there would not be much time left for footage about the film.

This type of effect gives a more mystery and hiding sensation. We considered using a smokey effect that moves around the text to portray an abandoned environment. However we chose not to use this because the smoke did not look realistic and badly done.

Poster Ideas

this first slide shows the font of the Title, tag line and the billing block. We did these first on a separate slide so we can make sure that all the fonts fitted together well which means the colour had to be the same and the billing block involved what we wanted. Viewing these on a black background meant it was easier t notice any errors for the billing block. It took up a lot of time to place things where we wanted.

This first idea was our main idea, we wanted to to emphasis the main character is being chased and that it is a struggle. We did this by placing the shot looking down a hill onto the main character, climbing towards the camera; with the antagonists in the background. A con of this poster is that the protagonists hands are missing from the shot which just looks like a typical photo. the photograph has also been blocked which means there is a black gap on the top and bottom of it.

This is our second draft. We have decided to take the picture in a different location This time to show that the main character has fallen over, this also emphasises her struggle which trying to escape from the antagonists. We have swapped the positioning of the title and tag line. This way it helps to show graces face more. We also made the colour of the billing blocks font; to a darker colour, yet not too dark so we cant see the writing. We did this to relate back to the idea of the film being set in the woods. Again, a con of this poster is that we can only see half of the main characters body, this had to be done because we wanted to get all of the antagonists bodies in the shot. To improve we needed to place the two characters at the back further away, and angle the camera differently.

Here is the third poster idea. The angle of the camera has provided a better shot of the three figures in the photo. This is what we wanted. We have changed the title and tag line back to the original place and by taking the pictures on a different camera it has taken away the block shape of the picture, yet there is still some black... waste of paper space.

This is our final poster piece.  we have considered all of the problems we have faced with the other poster ideas. No matter what camera we used, the shape of the picture was still blocked, so to overcome this we darkened the whole picture and let the lighting focus on the main character which makes only two black figures in the background. This   clarifies to the audience who the main character is, and makes the two antagonists in the background anonymous. The darkness also emphasises on the lack of lighting due to the fact the film set in a wooded area with only natural light, the lack of light helps to set the mood of the film aswell, and by injecting an impression of a man hunt into the audiences opinion.

Facebook Feedback

This print screen shows that I have uploaded a possible final piece for our film poster. I have noticed that a certain age group have liked this picture which means that this poster has appealed more to the teenage target group. This is our target.

Making the trailers music

The Twilight Eclipse trailer inspired us all to create such music, as it is a majority of the film is based in the woods, We have used the heavy base that drums throughout the trailer, and an uneven pitch throughout the trailer. This has an effect on the audience because it builds suspense when action is going to happen and when the scenes are calm and happy.

Trailer research

Sorority Row

The trailer starts off with an upbeat and modern backing music which dedicates to the teen and over audience. It has a motherly voice over the first part of how proud the lady of the house is- which show the girl characters are not totally independent and met full maturity.
There are also short clips during the party duration of the trailer- helping to emphasis the excitement and energy of the youth. This way teenagers and just over can easily relate to the scenes which makes them the target audience.

During the party shots, the diegetic sound of a party also helps the set the mood and attract the target audience. However, the sound turns into non-diegetic when the mood changes and the viewer can see the problem of the film. The music then began to slowly fade, until a complete stop when dialogue came into it.

When murdur and gore was introduced in the trailer, quick shots were used to indicate tension, shock and panic in the scene.

Text is then added to the trailer, convincing the audience to have a scared yet intrigued mood towards the film.

The trailer also used a crossover dissolve of when the girls graduated, at this point of the trailer, it hinted that all of this is a happy memory which indicates the characters near future holds terror- portrayed when they are then shot mourning over the dead girl.

Thriller questionnaire results

These are some results that can be presented by graph. We wanted to have a more narrowed idea about what the target audience want from a thriller. This would help us decide what to include in our trailer. We asked 30 people that we thought looked like our target audience.

As an outcome, we are going to rate our film 15 as this is a rating that can be viewed by most ages that we wanted. We also asked where  the audience thinks the thriller should be set. We had a mixed results, yet the having a country setting dominated over setting it in the city. To keep most of the audience happy we set the trailer in the city and in the country(woods).

Media theories we can apply to our work

The gratification theory
The gratification theory argues that the audience holds power over the media sources, because they can use, watch or read certain media types whenever they like. There is a variety of reasons why people would rely on entertainment factors such as relaxation, filling time, emotional release or sexual arousal.

I think that this theory can be applied to this project because I believe that we have aimed to attempt to get the audience to feel slightly intregued by the trailer and feel a bit scared. This trailer is a typical thriller that people can anticipate what would happen. However filming techniques such as quick, short and snappy clips secure the idea that there would be tense scenes in the film. The trailer can be viewed at any time the audience desires once the trailer has been published to the public which means they have the power!

The audience theory
Todrovs audience theory of the equilibrium (everything is fine), disruption (a problem occurs) and a new cycle of equilibrium (everything is fine again). I think that this theory partly applies to my groups trailer because it shows the three girls happily driving on their trip to the woods, yet the audience can see that the problem occurs when two feet enter the road infront of the car- this is the start of the disruption in the film. However we did not want to show a new equalibrium because we did not want to ruin the ending. We believe that leaving an anonymouse ending if the three girls survive will help draw the audience in.

Beanery opposites
Strausses theory of Beanery opposites means that two opposites that foreshadow eachother and possibly compliment eachother. For example:
up and down
Black and white
good and bad

We have applied Beanery opposites in our trailer by using:
boys and girls
driving and on foot
clean and muddy

Filming session #4

Today we filmed the car skidding as feet stepped out onto the road. This took a very long time for safety reasons. We had to make sure that everyonedone what they had to do at the right time, otherwise someone could get hurt. It was also important that we made sure that the car tyres were in good condition; because of this we tried to as less practices as we could, so the tyres wouldnt get ruined.
To help, we had to cameras filming during this scene so that we wouldnt have to keep doing run throughs. We had a camera in the car, and a camera on the floor just behind where the feet where going to stand out in front of. Both of these has an effect on the audidence because they positioning of the camera on the floor gives a mysterious interpritation of the man. Whereas the camera inside the car shows how fast the car was going, and how relaxed the girls are- this completely contradicts how they will be feeling when the man steps out infront of the car.
