Qurantine and Queensdown Warren

While in doing our research, we saw the Quarantine trailer which we believed has a remarkable simularity when the girl gets dragged into the darkness and away from the camera.

We decided to shoot this scene because we thought it portrays a physical manipulation and female vulnerability. In relation to Quarantine's shot, I think it is more effective because the girl actually dissapears into the darkness, this provokes fear of what is pulling her. Whereas in our trailer, the audience can see who is pulling the girl. This is less effective. To improve, we could edit the lighting and make the scene darker, then just shine a light on the main characters face, so she is then pulled out of the lighting.

Filming session #3

Today we filmed the two girls getting tied up to a tree. We went to another location at one of our group members land. This allowed us to have more privacy and adjust the setting to how we wanted. We can unprepared as it began to get dark quickly and we didnt have any lighting for the background. We noticed this when the footage was uploaded and edited into the trailer. To overcome this we tried to edit the lighting on the Apple MACs however due to the poor quality of the cameras, the pixals went all fuzzy which made the quality of the footage even worse. So we have chosen to keep it the same.
As time went on, we came up with new ideas. One of our ideas was to capture the two girls running away from the camera, as if the camera was the hunters. However the problem with this is that the lighting was deffinately too dark so we couldnt use this unfortunately. Our use of the land was limited as it was rented out for other occasions so this was the only chance we had to film in that location.

Examples such as all of the above have in common:

  • Barcode
  • Strapline at the top of the page
  • Characters from featured films
  • A solid background

magazine cover research

What makes a good Magazine cover?

1. Attraction: When marketing, the cover must stick out from the rest. Most likely other magazines would have a simular story and will use it are their cover, which causes more of a competition between the two editions. The picture should be well centred, with inside news based around it.

2. Reveal the story heading inside: A breif heading of stories inside the magazine will want to make the consumer want to read more. The breifing must be catchy to help build more interest and feel more sturing. There should also be offer advertisments inside as well. This will attract the reader and encourage them to want to find out more about the offers.

3. Use relevent colours and fonts: Colours have a massive impact on the cover. The colour of the font must be relevent to the picture and magazine audience, for example a hot pink will be suitable for a magazine aimed at young girls. Use bold fonts, specially for the magazine name. Other fonts should be used for subheadings which will help to compliment each other.

4. Magazine company purpose: The magazine must dispay its purpose of what they are trying to dispose. For example a fashion magazine would usually have a picture of a model wearing the companies clothes. The age of the model will also help to determine the target audience.

This is a perfect example. The front cover has used colour that helps to capture the corner of someones eye, it then focuses on the centerd image of Johnny Depp in character as "Jack Sparrow" from "Pirates of the Caribbean"- this Walt Disney film is well known so already the viewer is interested to know more about the film. The manufactorers name is displayed on the top of the page, which is in a larger, bolder font in comparison to the rest of the text on this page.
My group have chosen to go for a fimular layout as this page. We have decided to use a "U" shape of text around the edge, so that the centered picture is not interupted as much.

Above is another brilliant example of a magazine cover. Total Film has used a similar layout to my first example, the image is in the centre of the page, with headings around it forming a "U"shape. The image in the middle shows the main character of Sherlock Holmes. Yet the tagline is placed at the bottom of the magazine under the film title. It has swapped places with more tag lines that advertised what is in the magazine. It is important that the magazine shows at least one character from the film of the main article. So the audience is drawn to the magazine and aware of the main article, they  the magazine have used the colour theme of blue and white, which is emphasised on the title of the film.

Animatic Storyboard

This is our animatice storyboard. It shows a rough plan of the sequence of the trailer. We have added in the music so we know when to show what shots when.

Filming session #2

For our next session, we decided to use up less time and take the photos for the magazine cover while filming. We didnt want to shoot for the poster as well because both of the male characters couldnt make it to this filming  session, and we had an image to have them in the poster.
Today, we filmed and also tested the range of shots that can be possibly used in the trailer. We wanted to aim to get as many shots as possible so that we had more choice of angles and movements when it came to editing the trailer.
We entered this session with many ideas in our head. This is an excellant start to creating the trailer. We was all motivated and feeling positive about the possable effects that can be introduced to this project. The weather was just how was wanted it, muggy, slightly damp and dark yet it was important that we didnt film when it was too dark otherwise we would have to adjust the the lighting.
We mainly focused on the three girls getting into the car and driving. We shot them having a convesation like anyother teenage girls would, and applied this as diegetic sound on the trailer. This would imply that these girls are just ordinary, random girls going on a camping trip.
We shot the girls getting into the car on my front drive. We wanted to syncornise the cardoors closing at the same time, this took ages! In this scene we also used an overshoulder shot the car boot being closed, and a low angle of the car moving off the drive. These variety of shots help to give a more vivid idea of what was going on.

Filming session #1

Today we began be filming possible establishing shots. It is important that we shot this in weather that is going to be consistant throughout all of the filming sessions- otherwise it would not look un proffessional, and confuse the audience that the film happens at different times... unless this is on purpose. While filming the establishing shots, we decided to use this time to find suitable places to shoot for the trailer, poster and magazine.

The film is based in a woods, which is why we made sure the establishing shot was in a wooded/earthy area. We decided to film our shots at the actual Queensdown Warren, it offered high land that can see far distances. We thought this would portray how abandoned the area is which would make it harder for the three girls to find help. However in the end came to the decision to use a panning camera movement of looking up a gloomy, hilly field. The lighting and weather conditions here sets the mood that something bad is going to happen at those woods.

Schedule

This shows a schedule of when we would come together and film/take pictures in our free time. The green highlighted days show the days we are all free to work in December. Yet we are aware that there are some days that not all four members of the group will need to participate on that day.

Risk Assessment

Risk assessment
To help prevent any delays and for health and safety reasons we have decided to come up with a risk assessment as we are filming outside in the dark.
  • No one is to wonder alone in a quiet area (woods) in the dark or in light
  • appropriate footwear must be worn
  • check that equipment is in good condition (no wires or loose connnections ect)
  • correct clothes should be worn (it will be cold as it gets dark)
  • bring a first aid kit and a charged mobile phone at hand
  • Always let someone else that isnt coming out filming; know where you are and how long you will be roughly.

Film poster research

Purpose of a film poster...
A film poster has the certain investment responsibility to engage the audience and encourage them to watch the film. It informs the audience about the release date, who is in the film and the picutre helps the portray what the genre is.

What makes a good poste?
1. Attention: AIDA is a simple marketing technique that is used in most advertisments. It stands for Attention, Interest, Desire and Action. The most important step is to grab the audiences attention, which will encourage them to want to know more about the film.

2.Showing without telling (iconography): Film posters are most effective when they are iconic. These two very alike posters portray the theme of the films, and attract attention at once. Both of these posters suggest a sex appeal, contrast and spacing at once which will draw the audiences attention.

3. Interest: It is hard to find a way to advertise some films in a poster without gving too much away. Unlike "True Blood" and "Jennifer's Body", "Inception" needs to give more away to help the audience understand what the theme of the film is and want them to find out more. It is Many posters use images that help to put the reader in the scene of the film, which helps to create incentive and tenstion.
This Inception poster is a great example of this strategy, it puts the audience in the scene which makes them want to see how it became like that and what happens after.

4.Style: It is important that films have a constant marketing style. Usually ones with a bold font help to attract the audience more, however the layout of the poster is vital as well. Watchmen is a perfect example of a rememberable style. Reflecting on the other features that make a good poster, it does not give too much away and gives the audience the effect that they are part of the scene in the film. The font has been adjusted into the picture by tlting the the font- which helps to give an action effect.

5. Informative: It is like a tradiation that all further details of the film such as the film release date and actors in the film are at the bottom of the poster.
